Description
Women acquire reproductive capacity during adolescence and keep it until the end of the fourth decade of life. Most of the pregnancies that occur during this period are unplanned. Family planning or birth control (contraception) allows making a responsible decision about the number of children a couple wishes to have, as well as the appropriate timing for such a significant event in anyone’s life. In recent years, family planning has acquired importance as an integral part of health services, particularly those related with maternal and child health programs. It is a priority action of reproductive health and includes the right to be informed of available contraceptive methods and the right to a free choice. At present, birth control programs and modern contraceptives allow that millions of people in the world decide the number of children they want to have and the spacing and timing of their births; also they are useful to avoid pregnancy. The possibilities of planning one’s family are multiple and both males and females have numerous contraceptive methods to choose from. Current programs have the purpose of making these methods available to the largest number of people and improving the quality of available options at the lowest possible cost.
